How it Works

The eMatrix™ system’s ergonomic applicator delivers bipolar radio frequency energy via a matrix of 64 electrodes in the disposable applicator tip. The RF energy generates fractional deep dermal heating in the region of the electrode matrix to induce skin injury, thus eliciting a wound healing response. Less affected tissue surrounding the matrix points may be stimulated by heat which helps accelerate the healing process, leading to a rejuvenated appearance of the skin.

How does the treatment work?

The Candela Gentlemax produces a wavelength of 1064nm as well as 755 nm, which are used depending of your skin type, with the longer wavelengths used in darker individuals. The laser energy is delivered through a hand-held device with a specific distance gauge. While the rest of the skin is almost completely transparent for this wavelength, it is highly absorbed in hair pigment melanin.

Thus, the laser beam passes through the skin and penetrates the targeted vessel or hair follicle. The laser energy heats up and coagulates the hair root, producing swelling of the skin around hair shaft known as perifollicular edema, which is a sign of successful hair ablation.

What can I expect during the treatment?

You may experience a stinging sensation during the treatment, which resolves immediately after the treatment is over. In some cases, you may be offered topical anesthetic cream, which may eliminate much of the discomfort associated with the treatment. Cold packs may be applied after the procedure for any discomfort.

What should I expect after the procedure?

The appearance of the treated vessels will dramatically change over time, turning from blue and purple into light red. Some of the vessels may bulge, however, any inflammation should disappear within a few hours. Patience is essential as the redness of the treated vessels gradually disappear. As the healing process occurs, your body will break down and reabsorb the vessel, which may take anywhere between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on the size of the veins.

The post-operative treatment regime may include wearing pressure hose, avoiding medication containing aspirin and wearing sunscreen. Make sure to discuss these options with your laser practitioner prior to the treatment. Excessive heat and vasodilation should be avoided for 48 hours after the treatment (no hot tubs or exercise)

How many treatments will I need?

Depending on the severity of the veins, you may require anywhere between one and three treatments six to eight weeks apart. The treatment is performed on the existing vessels, diminishing or completely eliminating their appearance. However, the development of new veins cannot be prevented. If your body tends to develop vascular problems you will most likely come back for additional treatments.

Are there side effects?

Your risks are minimal. Side effects may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering, and purpura (a laser bruise), in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects are rare. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your provider

How does a pulsed dye laser work?

The laser delivers an intense but gentle burst of yellow light to the skin. The light is specifically absorbed by the blood vessels in the dermis as well as the brown pigment melanin when the device is used in pigmented mode. The blood vessels are coagulated and then reabsorbed by the body during the healing process. The pigmented spots are treated without cooling spray to enable better absorption of the laser in brown skin pigment resulting in drying, scaling and peeling of lentigines (liver spots) or other pigmented lesions treated.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes. In fact, pulsed dye laser treatment is so safe that it has been used successfully for the treatment of portwine stains in infants and children. The epidermis is protected during the treatment by Candela’s unique dynamic cooling method. DCD sprays a cooling mist onto the skin before each laser pulse, increasing the patient’s comfort.

What precautions should be taken before and after pulsed dye laser treatment?

It is recommended to avoid sun exposure throughout the course of the treatment. A sunblock (SPF 30 or above) should be used. The post treatment care needed depends on which skin patch was treated. Be sure to discuss this with your physician before treatment.

Side effects may include purpura (a laser bruise), redness and swelling in the treated area. These are temporary and usually do not last for a few days. Permanent side effects such as scarring are rare.

Is the treatment painful?

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort related to the laser pulse. This feeling has been described by patients as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort is minimized by Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device. In addition, for some patients, a topical anesthetic may be used before treatment. Be sure to discuss it with our physicians.

What conditions are treated with the Candela laser system?

Tattoos (amateur and professional; multiple tattoo inks) are treated. The effectiveness of the laser is dependent upon the age, location, depth, and type of tattoo, as well as on the composition of the pigments.

Why would someone have a tattoo removed?

Many people are uncomfortable with a tattoo they had applied several years ago. It is estimated that as many as 50% of individuals with tattoos regret the permanency of the tattoo and wish to have it removed. * Treatment consists of placing a handpiece against the surface of the skin and activating the laser. As many patients describe it, each pulse feels like the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. * Smaller tattoos or skin lesions will require fewer pulses, while larger ones will require more. All tattoos will require retreatments, necessitating multiple patient visits. The number of treatments varies between 5 to 7 depending on the depth of color.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment with the Candela lasers varies from patient to patient depending on the age, size and type of tattoo, color of the patient’s skin and depth to which the tattoo extends beneath the skin’s surface. In general, these steps will take place:

* The patient is provided eye protection consisting of an opaque covering or goggles at time of treatment.
* The skin’s reaction to the laser is tested during the first visit to determine the most effective treatment.
* Treatment consists of placing a handpiece against the surface of the skin and activating the laser. As many patients describe it, each pulse feels like the snapping of a rubber band against the skin.
* Smaller tattoos or skin lesions will require fewer pulses, while larger ones will require more. All tattoos will require retreatments, necessitating multiple patient visits. The number of treatments varies between 5 to 7 depending on the depth of color.
* The Candela system is less painful and requires less recovery time than some other treatment methods. The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Most patients do not require pain management.
* In some cases, however, depending on the nature and location of the tattoo or lesion, the physician may elect to use some form of anesthetic.

UVB / Blue Light / Photodynamic

Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy comprises the use of photosensitizier (methylaminoleuvulinc acid) and red visible light to treat multiple precancerous conditions like actinic keratosis. It is highly efficient in individuals who have small multiple lesions on the face, scalp or arms where surgery or other destructive modalities are impractical. Photodynamic therapy is also used in treatment for acne with the blue light and for photo-rejuvenation and skin tightening. 

UVB Phototherapy

This is small controlled band (“Narrowband”) UVB light used for the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo (pigment loss), atopic dermatitis, and other skin conditions. The treatment usually lasts from one to several minutes depending on the skin type and duration of treatment. For significant improvement it is necessary to have sessions twice a week for 4-6 weeks at least, which may not be suitable for all the patients. However, therapy does not require any systemic medications, and it is usually well tolerated.
